Bloodroot          Unfolding in spring from within a single leaf, the pure white Bloodroot flower embodies the vibration of inner balance and spiritualized intelligence. Very helpful for easing in to and deepening  meditative and centered states. Additionally, during times when the mind “secedes” from the body, this flower essence balances energies that are either overly excited or overly cheerless.

SEED THOUGHT:
 All is Well

Dandelion
The familiar metamorphosis of the common Dandelion provides a powerful clue to the nature of its essence. Rising seemingly out of nowhere in early spring through late fall, it does not content itself with one form, but moves from sturdy yellow flower to delicate white seed head with surprising speed.

The essence of this flower similarly speaks to issues of transformation, especially when sturdiness gets in the way of emerging delicacy or there is a sense of "stuck" energy. Provides a subtle energetic pathway that facilitates creation and consideration of new thoughts, ideas and methods.

SEED THOUGHT: Change-Ability

Holly      In wintertime, the signature characteristic of undying abundance and generosity in the midst of seeming barrenness is easy to see in American Holly trees as they remain clothed in vivid, sheltering, evergreen leaves and nourish winter creatures with their bright red berries.

Similarly, American Holly flower essence resonates with the vibration of

harmony, compassion and loving tolerance for all of creation including ourselves. This flower essence soap is used when energetic barriers express as frustration, alienation or dark thoughts, and also when there is a yearning for love and acceptance.

SEED THOUGHT:  Feel Better Now

Areas of Affinity:   Area on the torso at the base of the neck; shoulders, upper chest and back – the same area where a necklace would lay.

Iris

Associated since early times with the rainbow connection between heaven and earth (Iris was the Greek goddess of the rainbow), the essence of Iris resonates with the vibration of artistic inspiration, inviting spontaneity,
imagination, and pleasure in to the creative process. Clears away energetic impediments to free and joyful creative expression. Iris is the flower essence for artists.

SEED THOUGHT:  Muse Alert

Queen Anne's Lace     The essence of the Queen Anne's Lace flower is associated with holistic and inclusive consciousness. This essence works to balance the energies associated with a desire for greater clarity and depth of vision, or when there is a consciousness of fragmentation. It brings forward the insight to see the next step UP.

The structure of the flower itself shows

countless tiny white flowers joined as if one, around a luminous purple center. In a similar way, the holistic view sees and appreciates the invisible connections that join all of life together around a luminous Center of Being.

SEED THOUGHT:    Insight, Gratitude & Grace

Areas of Affinity: Top of head and extending an arms length above the head, hips and buttocks, breasts, lower abdomen.

Smaller Pussy Toes     A native American wildflower, the Smaller Pussy Toes plant is so named because of the resemblance of its fuzzy, white, clustered flowers to cat's paws. In lawns and open fields, huge magic circles of the low growing plants bloom all together over a period of several weeks in spring, creating ground-hugging clouds of white fuzziness.

This remarkable flower essence clears away energetic impediments to relaxation, peace, renewal, inner quiet, contentment and purposeful direction. Balances energies of agitation, irritation and distraction.

Spiderwort
Ghost-buster. For protection from and clearing of psychic toxins. Restlessness.

Star of Bethlehem

The Star of Bethlehem flower heralds early spring with bountiful and hardy colonies of dazzling white flowers. Blooming continuously for weeks, they brave many changes of weather and circumstance, remaining fresh and untouched by fate.

They speak of an inner strength and resilience that is reflected in the
association of Star of Bethlehem flower essence with the balancing of abrupt, startling, grievous, hurtful or shocking energies - the kind that pierce, rather than caress.

SEED THOUGHT:  Shock Absorber

Areas of Affinity:
Forehead and back and sides of head, between eyebrows; on the chest about one hands width below collar bone, injuries.

Wild Rose

For stress and pressure that is so intense and long lasting that one capitulates important parts of themselves. For giving up, giving in, loss of strength, when the "if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” mentality sets in. Restorative.

This flower essence is made from tough, wild growing, massively fragrant multifloras that bloom buckets of five petaled white flowers in late spring and early summer.

How to Select Essences

Sanctuary Essences - Background

Sanctuary Flower Essences are co-created by basically traditional methods from native and introduced plant species. The flowers chosen are from both wild growing (volunteers) and cultivated species and are intuitively selected. Pure and energetic, Sanctuary Essences embody an exceptional vibrancy and potency that is quite noticeable. These qualities are attributable in part to the magical Welsh Mountains area where these essences are made.

One of only two places* on earth where black granite is found in quantity, the Welsh Mountains of Pennsylvania manifest immensely powerful earth based energies that readily magnetize and magnify the presence of the angelic and devic realms. Populated for thousands of years by people who lived in harmony with the land, the Welsh Mountains also hold ancient and deeply ingrained patterns of human / nature / spirit co-operation and co-creation. These patterns and energies actively assist the development of all forms of inspired, profound and holistic consciousness including flower essences and help make Sanctuary Essences both gentle and nurturing and deep reaching and catalytic. Sanctuary Essences are co-created in the big circle garden at the home of Aquila and Rick Little Wing in the Welsh Mountains of Pennsylvania.

* Where's the other one?   Wales!  Wales was greatly loved by Dr. Bach who as a boy spent school holidays hiking and camping there. Later on, near one of the Welsh mountain rivers, he found the first of the herbal remedies for which he became famous. Then in 1930, Dr. Bach again traveled to Wales where he discovered the sun method of flower essence preparation and defined the principles of flower essence healing.

Basic Essence Information

What are Flower Essences?

Used in various forms throughout the ages, flower essences (also called flower remedies) were introduced to the modern world by the research of Dr. Edward Bach, a British physician and homeopath. Dr. Bach developed his flower essences in the 1920's and 30's in response to the need for a very gentle form of healing that addressed the mental, emotional and spiritual issues he believed were the underlying causes of disease.

The term flower essence refers to liquid tinctures made from flowers that are prepared so that the life force and unique subtle energetic1 pattern2 of a plant are captured in water. Created using a simple, low tech process3, flower essences are preparations of pure energy and contain none of the physical substance of the plant. When introduced into ones' energy field, they dissolve energetic blocks and imbalances that lead to unhappiness and dis-ease by interacting with and balancing the complex network of energetic patterns that are the manifestations of life. This is possible because a sympathetic attunement exists between humanity and individual flower essences4

Flower essences are most often used to help process trauma and stress, clear away unproductive life patterns, and expand and elevate consciousness. They act as catalysts for inner change by gently balancing, supporting and enhancing the "better angels of our nature". This catalyzing and balancing process has a direct and positive impact on consciousness.

When flower essences are used to eliminate energetic impediments, consciousness is raised and the individual is able to function from a point that is closer to the real Self, which brings a sense of inner harmony. As conscious awareness is elevated, the ability to understand and incorporate higher ideals and healthier life patterns is enhanced, aiding the restoration of happiness and health.

This shift may be gradual or immediate. For example, in acute or emergency situations, the action of flower essences is often observed to be dramatic, remarkable and swift, while the transformation of deep, long-standing issues may be observed to emerge over a period of time.

Flower essences fall within the general alternative healing category of vibrational healing techniques.  Other vibrational techniques include such disciplines as homeopathy and acupuncture. Since flower essences are basically tinctures of the energy of pure consciousness, they operate in the realm of consciousness.  Because they operate in the realm of consciousness, flower essences enjoy what is known as "self-adjusting" properties.  This means that when an essence is used that is inappropriate, nothing happens - there are no adverse reactions5. In addition, flower essences have the added benefit of not interfering with any other modalities or medications one may be using, and are not habit forming.  Flower essences are the most deep acting form of vibrational healing.

Flower essences have no fragrance and flower essence healing should not be confused with aromatherapy. While aromatherapy and flower essences often address the same issues (tension, stress, etc) they operate at  different levels: aromatherapy utilizes direct stimulation through the senses whereas flower essences stimulate the non-physical consciousness by supplying subtle energetic healing patterns.

How Are Essences Selected?

Flower essences are one of the easiest to use alternative healing modalities around today and many ways have been discovered for selecting the "right" essence(s).  Flower essences are often chosen by examining mental and emotional states because it is through this realm that the first sign of inner imbalance manifests.  That is why the essence descriptions that appear on this website deal with mental and emotional states, qualities of thought and inner needs and desires. To select, one can search for indications and explanations that describe the troublesome state of mind or problem.

Various intuitive means can also be used such as dowsing (pendulums), applied kinesiology (muscle testing), picking the essence of the flower that is most appealing or attractive to you, or by intuitive "hits".  In reality, experienced flower essence practitioners often rely on a variety of methods including the ones listed here.

Happily, successful application of flower essences does not depend on buying into any
particular belief system or cosmology. And, the user does not have to think they will work in order to obtain the desired results, i.e., they do not work because of the placebo effect6.  This observation is supported by abundant experience with those who are incapable of acting on the placebo effect such as babies and children, unconscious people, the mentally challenged, animals and plants.

What is the Correct Way to Use Essences?

Flower essences may be used in any way that introduces them into ones' energy field.  They are most often taken orally, a few drops at a time, and are also used in compresses, baths, mists and topically applied creams and oils.

Whatever the delivery system, we find that flower essences powerfully broadcast the message that anything we experience, no matter how commonplace or trying it may seem, can nurture greater awareness. They remind us that we don't have to be "sick" to get better, and, that no matter how far away inner balance, expanded awareness and spiritual acceleration may seem, these qualities can take root, grow and flourish in all of our activities.

Finally, while flower essences can enhance ones' life experience in many ways, they are not and should not be considered a substitute for medical treatment. In case of injury or illness one should seek the appropriate professional assistance.

3 Flower essences are made by floating fresh flowers on the surface of water in a clear glass bowl and exposing it to unobstructed sunlight. During the time the flowers and water are exposed to the sun, the life force and unique vibrational signature of the flowers are transferred to the water. The water that is produced from this process is called mother tincture and is preserved, usually with brandy. The flower essence mother tincture is the source for stock strength essences which are made by combining two drops of mother tincture with one ounce of a water/brandy blend. Most essences available commercially are stock strength. Stock strength can be further diluted to "dosage" strength (two or more drops of stock in one ounce water/brandy blend) without loss of potency.
